Processing kola nuts into kola powder and kola extract involves several steps, starting from the harvesting of the nuts to the final product.

Harvesting and Preparation

  1. Harvesting: Kola nuts are harvested from the kola tree, primarily found in West Africa and the Indian Ocean isles (the 2 best tastes.
  2. Cleaning: The harvested nuts are cleaned to remove any dirt or debris.
  3. Drying: The nuts are sun-dried or mechanically dried to reduce moisture content, which helps in preserving them.

Kola Powder Production

  1. Peeling: The outer shell of the dried kola nuts is removed.
  2. Grinding: The peeled kola nuts are ground into a fine powder using a grinder or milling machine.
  3. Sieving: The ground powder is sieved to ensure uniformity in particle size.
  4. Packaging: The kola powder is then packaged for distribution and sale.

Kola Extract Production

  1. Maceration: The dried kola nuts are soaked in pressurized water, to extract the active compounds. This process is called maceration. (Alcohol is available as well as an extract solvent.)
  2. Filtration: The mixture is filtered to separate the solid residues from the liquid extract.
  3. Concentration: The filtered liquid is then concentrated by evaporating the solvent, often under reduced pressure, to obtain a thicker extract.
  4. Purification: Further purification steps may be taken to isolate specific compounds or to refine the extract.
  5. Packaging: The final kola extract is packaged in jugs, maxitainers, bottles or other containers for distribution.

Quality Control and Storage

  1. Quality Control: Throughout the process, quality control measures are implemented to ensure the purity and potency of the kola products.
  2. Storage: The finished kola powder and extract are stored in a cool, dry place to maintain their quality until they are distributed.

These steps ensure that the kola nuts are processed efficiently into high-quality kola powder and extract, which are then used in various applications such as flavorings, beverages, and traditional medicines.
